Pizza Roll-Ups Recipe

Preparing the Dough

First you want to take your refrigerated pizza dough out of the fridge and let it sit on the counter for about five or ten minutes so it is not too cold to work with. Spread a little bit of flour on a clean flat surface or use a piece of parchment paper so the dough does not stick to your table. Unroll the dough carefully and use your hands or a rolling pin to stretch it out into a large rectangle shape. Try to make the thickness even all the way across so that every roll up cooks at the same speed later on.

Adding the Fillings

Once your dough is flat you will take your pizza sauce and spread it thinly over the surface but leave about an inch of space around the edges. If you put too much sauce it might leak out and make the dough soggy so a thin layer is always better. Sprinkle your shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the sauce making sure to cover every corner. Now lay your pepperoni slices on top of the cheese in a single layer. You can also add very small pieces of bell peppers or onions at this stage if you like extra crunch.

Rolling it Up

Starting from one of the long sides of the rectangle slowly and tightly roll the dough upward just like you are making a sleeping bag or a cinnamon roll. Work slowly to keep the fillings inside and try to keep the roll tight so there are no big air pockets. Once you reach the end pinch the seam of the dough with your fingers to seal it shut. Use a sharp knife to cut the long log into individual circles that are about one inch thick. You should get about twelve to fifteen rolls depending on how thick you slice them.

Cooking in the Air Fryer

If you are using an air fryer you should lightly spray the basket with cooking spray so the rolls do not stick to the bottom. Place the rolls in the basket in a single layer making sure they are not touching each other so the hot air can circulate around them. Mix your melted butter with garlic powder and Italian seasoning and brush this mixture over the top of each roll. Set your air fryer to 375 degrees and cook them for about 8 to 10 minutes. They are done when the cheese is bubbly and the dough is a beautiful golden brown color.

Cooking in the Oven

If you prefer using your oven you should first preheat it to 400 degrees and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Place your pizza rolls on the tray with some space between them and brush them with that delicious garlic butter mixture. Bake them in the center of the oven for about 12 to 15 minutes. Keep an eye on them during the last few minutes because every oven is a little bit different and you do not want the bottoms to burn while the tops are still pale.

Serving the Snack

Once they are finished cooking let the pizza roll ups sit for about two or three minutes because the cheese inside will be very hot. Sprinkle some extra parmesan cheese and fresh parsley on top while they are still warm so the cheese sticks to the crust. Serve them on a big platter with a small bowl of warm marinara sauce on the side for dipping. These are best eaten while they are fresh and warm but they are still tasty even after they have cooled down a little bit.
