I put aluminum foil balls in my window wells for the first time in 8 years. This is what happened
Preparing the aluminum foil balls was surprisingly simple. I purchased a large roll of heavy-duty aluminum foil and tore off sheets measuring approximately 18 inches by 18 inches. I crumpled each sheet into a tight ball, ensuring they were compact enough to stay in place but large enough to cover a decent amount of surface area.
Once I had several dozen foil balls, I placed them evenly across the bottom of each window well. To secure them, I used small garden stakes to anchor the balls in place, preventing them from being blown away by wind or washed out by rain. I made sure the foil balls were spaced out evenly to maximize their reflective properties.
3. The Immediate Changes I Noticed in Light and Visibility
To my pleasant surprise, the addition of aluminum foil balls significantly increased the amount of light entering the basement. The reflective surface of the foil balls bounced sunlight into the basement windows, creating a brighter and more inviting environment. I measured the light intensity using a lux meter and noted an increase from 300 lux to approximately 450 lux on sunny days.
This improvement in lighting made the basement feel less like an underground cave and more like a part of the home that was actually usable. The enhanced visibility was immediately noticeable, and I found myself spending more time in the basement, enjoying the newfound brightness.
