I put a wet sponge in my microwave and ran it for 2 minutes to clean the inside. This is what happened

Cleaning the microwave is often a dreaded task, much like tackling the bottom of the kitchen sink or the back of the fridge. Over time, splatters and spills can create a tough, crusty layer on the microwave interior, making it uninviting and unsanitary. With so many quick-fix cleaning hacks circulating online, it’s tempting to find one that promises to make the job easier.
One such hack involves using a wet sponge to harness the power of steam, supposedly loosening grime and making it easier to wipe away. Curious about its effectiveness, I decided to put this popular cleaning method to the test. Here’s what happened when I placed a wet sponge in my microwave and ran it for two minutes.
1. Why I Tried the Wet Sponge Microwave Cleaning Hack
The wet sponge microwave trick caught my attention because it seemed like a straightforward solution to a common problem. The idea is that by heating a wet sponge, steam is generated, which helps loosen stubborn food particles and stains from the microwave walls. As someone who appreciates a tidy kitchen but prefers to avoid harsh chemicals, this natural method appeared to be a perfect fit.
Moreover, the time commitment is minimal—just two minutes on high power, according to various online sources. The convenience factor, combined with the promise of a sparkling clean microwave, made this hack worth exploring.
2. How I Prepared the Sponge (And What I Used)
To prepare for the experiment, I selected a standard kitchen sponge, approximately 4 inches by 2.5 inches in size. I made sure it was free from any metal scrubbing surfaces, as metal can cause sparks in the microwave. After soaking the sponge thoroughly under the faucet, I squeezed it gently to remove excess water, ensuring it was damp but not dripping.
To add a fresh scent and enhance the cleaning power, I added a few drops of lemon essential oil to the sponge. This was an optional step, but I hoped it would help neutralize any lingering odors within the microwave.
3. Setting the Timer: What Happens in 2 Minutes on High
With the sponge prepared, I placed it in the center of the microwave and set the timer for two minutes on the highest power setting. As the microwave began to hum, I observed through the glass door. Within seconds, steam started to rise from the sponge, creating a foggy atmosphere inside the microwave.
By the end of the two minutes, the interior was filled with steam, and the sponge was noticeably hot. I was careful not to open the door immediately, allowing the steam to work its magic for a few extra moments before proceeding.
