Bacon and Cheese-Stuffed Tater Tots

Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes

Time: 15 minutes
Intensity: Low

Boil the peeled and cubed potatoes in salted water until fork-tender, about 10–12 minutes. Drain thoroughly and transfer to a large bowl. Mash the potatoes until smooth, then mix in butter, milk, salt, and pepper. Allow the mashed potatoes to cool slightly so they are easier to handle.

Step 2: Prepare the Filling

Time: 10 minutes
Intensity: Low

Cook the bacon in a skillet over medium heat until crispy. Remove excess grease and crumble into small pieces. In a bowl, combine the bacon, shredded cheese, and optional green onions. Mix well and set aside.

Step 3: Shape and Stuff the Tater Tots

Time: 20 minutes
Intensity: Medium

Take a small portion of mashed potatoes (about 2 tablespoons) and flatten it in your palm. Place a teaspoon of the bacon and cheese mixture in the center, then carefully wrap the potato around the filling to form a small cylinder or oval shape. Repeat with the remaining mixture.

Tip: If the mixture feels sticky, lightly dust your hands with flour.

Step 4: Coat the Tots

Time: 10 minutes
Intensity: Medium

Prepare three bowls: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with breadcrumbs mixed with garlic powder and paprika.

Roll each stuffed tot in flour, dip into the egg, and then coat evenly with breadcrumbs. For extra crispiness, you can double-coat by repeating the egg and breadcrumb step.

Step 5: Cook the Tater Tots

Option 1: Deep Frying

Time: 5–6 minutes
Intensity: Medium-High

Heat oil in a deep pan to 175°C (350°F). Fry the tots in batches until golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Option 2: Baking

Time: 20–25 minutes
Intensity: Medium

Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F). Place tots on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spray lightly with cooking oil, and bake until golden, flipping halfway through.

Option 3: Air Frying

Time: 12–15 minutes
Intensity: Low-Medium

Preheat air fryer to 190°C (375°F). Arrange tots in a single layer and cook until crispy, shaking halfway through.

Final Touches

Once cooked, let the tater tots rest for 2–3 minutes. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauces such as ketchup, ranch dressing, garlic mayo, or spicy sriracha sauce. Garnish with chopped parsley or extra green onions for a fresh touch.
