Vanilla Buttercream Frosting Recipe

Start by placing the softened butter into a large mixing bowl. The butter should be soft enough to press easily with a spoon but not melted. Soft butter helps create a smooth and fluffy frosting. Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, beat the butter on medium speed for about two minutes. This step adds air to the butter and makes it lighter in color and texture. Scrape the sides of the bowl so everything mixes evenly.

Next add the powdered sugar slowly. Add one cup at a time while mixing on low speed. Mixing slowly at first prevents sugar from flying out of the bowl. After each addition, increase the speed slightly and mix until the sugar blends fully into the butter. Continue this process until all the sugar is mixed in. The mixture will look thick and slightly crumbly at this stage, which is normal.

Now add the vanilla extract and the pinch of salt. Mix again on medium speed until the frosting starts to come together. The vanilla adds warmth and aroma, while the salt helps balance the sweetness and makes the flavor richer. At this point the frosting may still feel thick, so you will adjust the texture next.

Add the milk or cream one tablespoon at a time. Mix well after each addition. Watch the texture carefully. The frosting should become smooth, creamy, and easy to spread. If you want a thicker frosting for piping designs, use less liquid. If you want a softer frosting for spreading, add a little more liquid. Continue mixing for another two to three minutes until the frosting looks fluffy and holds its shape.

Finally stop the mixer and taste the frosting. If you want more vanilla flavor, you can add a few drops more. If it feels too sweet, a tiny extra pinch of salt can help. Once you are happy with the taste and texture, your vanilla buttercream frosting is ready to use. Spread it immediately or store it properly for later use.
