Cheese-stuffed bread buns are a delightful treat that harken back to the comforting kitchens of the Midwest, where every meal was a labor of love and a testament to the bounty of the land. These buns are a nod to the simple joys of home baking, where the aroma of freshly baked bread mingles with the rich, inviting scent of melted cheese. Perfect for family gatherings or a cozy afternoon snack, these buns bring a touch of nostalgia and warmth to any table. The recipe combines the timeless tradition of bread-making with the irresistible allure of cheese, making it a favorite for both young and old.
These cheese-stuffed bread buns pair beautifully with a hearty bowl of homemade soup, such as creamy tomato or rustic vegetable. For a lighter option, serve them alongside a crisp garden salad with a tangy vinaigrette. They also make a wonderful accompaniment to a charcuterie board, adding a soft, cheesy contrast to cured meats and pickled vegetables. For a simple yet satisfying meal, enjoy them warm from the oven with a pat of butter and a drizzle of honey.
Cheese-Stuffed Bread Buns
Servings: 12

Ingredients
4 cups all-purpose flour
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
1 1/2 cups warm water
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
1 1/2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or your choice)
1 egg (for egg wash)
Directions
In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and melted butter. Mix until a dough forms.
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Flatten each piece into a small disc.
Place a tablespoon of shredded cheese in the center of each disc, then fold the edges over the cheese and pinch to seal, forming a ball.
Place the buns seam-side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the tops of the buns with beaten egg for a shiny finish.
Bake the buns for 20-25 minutes or until they are golden brown and the cheese is bubbling through the seams.
Allow the buns to cool slightly before serving.
Variations & Tips
For a different flavor profile, try adding herbs like rosemary or thyme to the dough. You can also experiment with different types of cheese, such as mozzarella for a gooey center or blue cheese for a bold taste. If you prefer a bit of spice, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the cheese filling. For a sweeter version, replace the cheese with a dollop of fruit preserves or chocolate chips.
