I stuck heavy plastic bubble wrap to my sun-beaten June living room windows to block the heat for 5 days.

On the first day, I noticed an immediate difference in the quality of light entering the room. The bubble wrap diffused the harsh sunlight, creating a softer, more muted ambiance. While it did obscure the view outside, I found the trade-off acceptable given the potential cooling benefits.
Temperature-wise, there was a noticeable drop in the heat radiating from the windows. Although the room wasn’t drastically cooler, the bubble wrap seemed to act as a barrier against the intense midday sun, making the space more comfortable over the course of the day.
5. Days 2–3: Did The Bubble Wrap Really Keep The Living Room Cooler?
As the days progressed, I continued to monitor the temperature in the living room. Using a thermometer, I recorded a consistent decrease of about 3 to 4 degrees Fahrenheit compared to the previous week without the bubble wrap. This might not seem significant, but during peak heat hours, even a small reduction made the room more bearable.
The air conditioning seemed to cycle less frequently, suggesting that the bubble wrap was indeed helping to insulate the space. I was pleasantly surprised to find that such a simple material could have a measurable impact on the room’s temperature.
6. The Unexpected Side Effects: Condensation, Smell, And Noise
One of the most unexpected side effects was the presence of condensation between the bubble wrap and the window. Each morning, I noticed a slight buildup of moisture, which seemed to dissipate as the day warmed up. This wasn’t a major issue, but it did require occasional wiping to prevent any potential damage to the window frames.
Another surprise was the faint plastic smell that lingered in the room initially. It wasn’t overpowering, but it was noticeable, especially when the windows were closed. Additionally, the bubble wrap created a slight crinkling noise during windy days, which was a minor annoyance but not a dealbreaker.
7. Living In A Dimmer Room: How It Affected Mood, Routine, And Comfort
With the bubble wrap diffusing the sunlight, the living room took on a much dimmer atmosphere. While this was great for reducing glare on screens and creating a cozy environment, it did impact my mood slightly. I found myself feeling a bit more lethargic and less motivated during the day.
The dimmer light also affected my routine, especially in the mornings when natural light typically helped me wake up. However, the increased comfort from the reduced heat made it a worthwhile compromise, allowing for more enjoyable afternoons without the oppressive heat.
