I poured a thick perimeter of dry yellow cornmeal around the outside foundation of my house to stop marching June ants for 5 days

It was during this period that I began to hope the solution might have more lasting effects than I initially anticipated. However, I remained vigilant, knowing that the true test would be whether the cornmeal could maintain its effectiveness over several days.
5. Day 4: The First Signs the Cornmeal Barrier Was Breaking Down
By the fourth day, I began to notice a few ants attempting to navigate the cornmeal line. The once pristine barrier had been disturbed slightly by wind and a light drizzle, causing some gaps to appear. Despite this, the majority of ants still seemed hesitant to cross.
This observation highlighted a potential weakness in the cornmeal method: its susceptibility to weather conditions. I realized that maintaining the integrity of the barrier was crucial, but not always feasible with natural elements at play.
6. Day 5 Morning: When the Ants Finally Tested the Yellow Line
On the morning of the fifth day, my heart sank as I observed several ants daring to cross the cornmeal line. The barrier had thinned significantly, and the ants seemed to be regaining confidence. It was a stark reminder of the limitations of this method.
The gradual breakdown of the cornmeal line over time had allowed the ants to resume their usual routes, and it became clear that this method could only provide a temporary reprieve without consistent maintenance.
7. Today’s Discovery: What I Saw When I Checked the Cornmeal Ring
When I checked the cornmeal ring today, it was clear that the experiment had reached its endpoint. The cornmeal barrier had been disrupted enough to allow ants to cross freely in some areas. However, I did notice fewer ants overall compared to when I started.
This suggested that while the cornmeal had not completely eradicated the ants, it had at least reduced their numbers temporarily. The effectiveness of the method was apparent, albeit short-lived due to environmental factors.
