I poured a gallon of hot vinegar down my garbage disposal for the first time ever.

Initially, the smell was quite strong as the hot vinegar hit the disposal. The sour, pungent aroma filled the kitchen, making me wince slightly. However, to my surprise, the smell dissipated rather quickly. Within a few minutes, the air in the kitchen seemed to neutralize, and there was no lingering vinegar odor.
This transformation from an overwhelming scent to a neutral one was unexpected, and I attributed it to the vinegar’s natural deodorizing properties. It seemed to not only clean the disposal but also freshen the air, eliminating the musty smell that had plagued my kitchen.
5. What It Did To The Gunk, Grease, And Mystery Slime In The Drain
After allowing the vinegar to sit in the disposal for about 15 minutes, I flushed the system with a pot of boiling water. This step was crucial to help move any loosened debris out of the drain. I noticed that the disposal sounded smoother and less labored when I ran it, indicating that the blades were no longer encumbered by gunk.
Upon closer inspection with a flashlight, I could see that the build-up of grease and slime had significantly diminished. The interior of the disposal appeared cleaner, with fewer visible residues clinging to the sides. This was a promising sign that the vinegar had effectively cut through the grime.
6. Did It Actually Unclog The Disposal Or Just Move The Problem?
One of my main concerns was whether the vinegar would truly unclog the disposal or simply shift the problem further down the pipes. After running the disposal with cold water for a few minutes, I was pleased to observe that the water drained much more quickly and smoothly than before.
Although I couldn’t see deep into the pipes, the improved drainage suggested that the vinegar had effectively cleared the clog rather than merely relocating it. However, I remained cautious, knowing that some clogs could be more stubborn and require additional treatment.
7. The Unexpected Noises (And What They Revealed About The Motor)
During the process, I noticed some unexpected noises coming from the disposal. As the hot vinegar made contact, there was a slight humming and a few popping sounds. These noises were not alarming but indicated some level of activity within the unit.
After the cleaning process, when I ran the disposal, the motor sounded healthier and less strained. The usual grinding noise was smoother, suggesting that the vinegar had helped clear the blades and improve the motor’s functionality. This was an encouraging sign that the cleaning had a positive impact.
