As the snow drifts over our little Midwestern town, there’s something truly comforting about a dessert that brings together the rich, indulgent flavor of chocolate with the refreshing zing of peppermint. This chocolate peppermint mousse is a nod to simpler times, when my mother would whip up a quick dessert to surprise us on those chilly winter evenings. With just four ingredients, it’s a perfect, fuss-free treat that captures the essence of holiday cheer and cozy family gatherings. Whether you’re looking to impress your guests or simply spoil yourself, this mousse is a delightful reminder that sometimes the simplest recipes are the most cherished.
This mousse pairs beautifully with a light shortbread cookie or a crisp biscotti on the side. If you’re serving it after a hearty meal, consider adding a dollop of whipped cream and a sprig of fresh mint for a touch of elegance. A hot cup of coffee or a glass of chilled milk complements this dessert wonderfully, balancing the rich flavors with a soothing finish.
Chocolate Peppermint Mousse
Servings: 4
Ingredients
1 cup heavy whipping cream
1 cup chocolate chips
1 teaspoon peppermint extract
2 tablespoons sugar
Directions
In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the chocolate chips, stirring frequently until smooth. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
In a large mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream with the sugar until soft peaks form.
Fold the melted chocolate into the whipped cream, being careful not to deflate it.
Add the peppermint extract and gently fold until well combined.
Spoon the mousse into serving dishes and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving.
Variations & Tips
For a different twist, you can substitute the peppermint extract with orange extract for a chocolate-orange mousse. If you prefer a sweeter mousse, you can increase the sugar to 3 tablespoons. Garnish with chocolate shavings or crushed peppermint candies for added texture and flavor. For a dairy-free version, use coconut cream and dairy-free chocolate chips.
